A rare gold-lacquer and multi-metal box raised on four small feet and fitted with two sliding drawers, each lacquered in dense nashiji. On the cover, dramatically divided obliquely in soft metal and gold lacquer, a male and female pheasant superbly worked in shibuichi, shakudo and gilt rummage among soft-metal plants on a slightly-mottled iron ground. A meandering stream with water reeds on a roiro ground form the sides. Metal plaque with Shorakusai Katsuhide signature and Keiu seal on the cover. Length, 9.5"; Width, 7 3/8". Meiji Period.
