bronze okimono of a namazu
A bronze okimono of a namazu (earthquake fish) poised upon a separate bronze and gilt stand modeled as a spray of water reeds and lilies. The dark, smoothly polished patination of the fish, its delicate whiskers, flattened head and eyes inlaid in shakudo, emphasizes the creature’s life-like attributes and the sculptor’s close attention to nature. Oshima Joun silver tablet on nether side. Height, 4 5/8"; length, 13.25". Meiji Period.
