Japanese silver tea and coffee service - K. Uyeda - Taisho Period
An amusing Satsuma tray of rectangular form with an elaborate gilt border consisting of colorful geometric bands of karako interspersed with varied fans. Its snowy, lakeside imagery concentrates upon the arrival to the pavilion of an important lady and her entourage. The attention, however, is directed to the ungraceful fall upon the ice of a young lady in the left foreground. Around her, inside the pavilion and out, the viewers express dismay at the event. The reverse of the tray illustrates samurai armor and implements. Signature unknown. Length, 9.5"; width, 6". Meiji Period.
