square-shaped, covered box - Meiji Period
A square-shaped, wonderfully conceived, covered box executed with various lacquer techniques, dense nashiji within. On its lid, a fan- shaped cartouche richly inlaid with encrustations of semi-precious jewels, floats beside a foliated rondel, also encrusted and tied with silken tassels. Both drift upon diaphanous silken textiles on a gold-lacquered, mottled surface. On the exterior sides, sprays of woodsy foliage in low relief complete the imagery. Length, 6"; width, 4.5". Meiji Period.
