trapezoidal iron tsuba - Ikkeido Jyoi - Edo Period
A trapezoidal iron tsuba, its imagery based upon the legend,“The Hare and the Moon”. On the front plate, chiseled in low relief in gilt and copper, the hare greets the hungry old man, Sakyamuni, sack over his shoulder. When the hare prepares to jump into the fire to provide food for him, Sakyamuni prevents the action, instead sending him to the moon to be honored for eternity. Signature with kao: Ikkeido Jyoi. Edo Period.
