An oval-shaped soft metal tsuba with the great Heian poet, Prince Narihara and his courtiers crossing a stream on horseback. The event, so complex upon so small a surface, with flowers, subjects, mountains, waters and rockwork is accentuated through the liberal use of gold, silver, shakudo and copper. On the reverse, an attendant bends over to drink from the waters. Height, 2.75"; width, 2.5". 19th century.
