A Japanese Gold and Roiro Covered Lacquered Box - Akira Matoba - Showa Period
A large gold and roiro covered lacquer box with rounded corners and inner tray. On its lid, a dramatic landscape of a pavilion surrounded by statuesque pine, maple trees and waterfall is rendered in multiple gold lacquers using both hiramaki-e and takamaki-e techniques. Within the tray densely sprinkled with nashiji, a Manchurian crane flies over pine and plum blossom designed in sparkling aogai. This lacquer box is the work of the noted Showa award-winning lacquer artist, Akira Matoba. Length, 13"; width, 13". Tomobako. Showa Period.
