A Japanese Lacquered Wood Netsuke of Two Eggplants - Yoyusai Signature - Edo Period
A rare lacquered wood netsuke designed as two attached eggplants, the smaller of the two lacquered in dense nashiji. Unexpected red and black-lacquered insects cling to their gold-brushed forms, creating a small, but intriguing sculpture. Gilt, aesthetically-wrought signature of the famous Edo period lacquer artist,
Yoyusai, on the nether side. Length, 2 1/8". (Described in “The Netsuke Handbook” by Ueda Reikichi. Page, 309.)
