Biography

Short entry. Open, citable sources for this maker are limited, so we have published only what we can source. It will be extended as research continues.

Komai Otojirō (1842–1917) was a Kyoto metalworker. The MAK in Vienna gives his dates and his name as 駒井音次郎. The Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum records that he learned nunome zōgan inlay from a Higo craftsman and was dealing in swords in Kyoto. When the samurai class was abolished he lost that livelihood, and in 1873 he turned to making goods for export. These became known abroad as “Komai works”.13

Dresden’s Kunstgewerbemuseum bought an inlaid iron vase signed Komai sei Kyōto jū (“made by Komai of Kyoto”) in 1884. The museum notes that such pieces are very rare in Japan because the workshop produced mainly for export. The Khalili Collection includes a group of iron pieces by the Komai family. He does not appear on the list of Imperial Household Artists.245

Interpretation

Because the name Komai was used by a family workshop over several generations, auction catalogues distinguish “Komai workshop” from the first-generation master. Our auction table keeps each catalogue’s own wording.2

At auction 落札作品

Our auction-records database holds 7 public results for this maker, at Bonhams and Christie’s, from 2007 to 2026. The highest is an Impressive Large Komai Dish depicting a Scene from Momijigari [Maple Viewing], Christie's, Art of Japan, 2016-12-08, lot 121, at £100,000 (about US$126,620 at the sale-date rate). These are public historical results, not valuations.

A charger sold in 2026 shows how Komai Otojirō drew on prints: the cataloguer identifies the central roundel as loosely based on an 1886 print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi of Nitta Shirō Tadatsune in the cave on Mount Fuji, and notes Hokusai’s Manga as another source used by the workshop.1

Christie’s descriptions of Komai iron wares record the technique in the house’s own words: gold and silver nunomezōgan and hirazōgan inlay on iron, with signatures such as “Kyoto ju Komai sei”.2

Facts in this section are as stated by the auction houses in their lot essays, footnoted below. Where they differ from other sources we say so.
