All seventy-nine appointees, 1890–1944

The Imperial Household Artist system (帝室技芸員, Teishitsu Gigei-in) was created in 1890. Appointees received 100 yen a year, submitted a work on appointment and accepted commissions, some for presentation to foreign dignitaries. From 1890 to 1944, seventy-nine artists were appointed. The list follows the appointment table on Japanese Wikipedia, which cites each appointment to the official gazette, the Kanpō [帝室技芸員]. English names are given only where an English Wikipedia article is linked; the others are shown in Japanese, as we have not yet sourced a romanisation. Field names are given in Japanese with our English gloss. Death dates are as given in that table; individual biographies sometimes differ by a few days (Namikawa Sōsuke, for example: 14 February 1910 in the table, 9 February in his own article).

The system in practice

Auction essays record appointments as part of a maker’s biography. Bonhams notes that Namikawa Sōsuke was appointed Teishitsu Gigeiin in 1896 in recognition of his achievements in wireless enamel¹, the same year as Namikawa Yasuyuki, Miyagawa Kōzan, Unno Shōmin and Suzuki Chōkichi in the table below.

Appointment did not of itself make every work from a studio an imperial commission. Where a catalogue calls an object an “imperial presentation” piece, as Christie’s did for a Hattori vase with two imperial mon in 2007, the claim is the house’s and rests on the object’s marks and history.²
